“Science is a quest for understanding.” – Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell.
When Jocelyn Bell Burnell was a postgraduate student she discovered radio pulsars – signals from tiny but extremely dense dead star remnants called neutron stars. Her quest for understanding has since spanned a decades-long career in astrophysics research and teaching. In 2014 she became the first female fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and she has campaigned throughout her career to improve the status of women in the fields of physics and astronomy.
